Critical thermal limits of Poecilia caucana (Steindachner, 1880) (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) Neotropical Ichthyology

Abstract Although temperature has far-reaching effects on fish biology, the thermal tolerance ranges of most freshwater fish species are unknown. This lack of information precludes forecasting responses to climatic change and does not allow for comparative analyses that may inform evolutionary and biogeographic studies. We used the critical thermal methodology to quantify acclimation capacity and thermal tolerance in the Neotropical freshwater species Poecilia caucana . For fish acclimated to 20˚C, 25ºC, and 28ºC, critical thermal minima (CTmin) were 12.52 ± 0.62ºC, 13.41 ± 0.56ºC and 14.24 ± 0.43ºC respectively, and critical thermal maxima (CTmax) were 38.43 ± 0.64ºC, 40.28 ± 0.92ºC and 41.57 ± 0.27ºC, respectively. How general are current comparative physiology studies?: A quantitative review RChHN

Comparative animal physiology and related fields (named here "ecological physiology") are entering a time of synthesis in the form of a quest for large scales patterns. However, these new approaches need to be supplied by great amounts of data, representative of existing animal forms. We tested whether this is the case by performing a quantitative survey in the most important media for ecological physiologists. We found that ecological physiologists have clear biases toward some taxonomic classes, which represent one third of existing animal phyla. Non-taxonomic characterization of animals (endothermy/ectothermy, aquatic/terrestrial), however, produced a more balanced picture. Evaluating the ecological impact of an oil spill is a complex issue requiring coherently articulated examination of the sequence of interactions that link the cell, where contaminants exert their effects, to the ecosystem, where interactions with human activities arise. This sequence of interactions traverses the frontiers between scientific disciplines (chemistry, toxicology, physiology, and fisheries ecology). Using the common sole (Solea solea L.) as a model species for the coastal habitats polluted by the "Erika" oil spill, our research project attempted to define indices of functional integrity that characterised the consequences of fuel exposure at the different biological levels. Influence of water temperature and oxygenation on the aerobic metabolic scope of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ArchiMer

Environmental influences (temperature and oxygenation) on cod metabolism and their impact on the ecology of this species were investigated. Limiting oxygen concentration curves (O-2 level ranging between 15 and 100% air saturation) were established at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC. The standard metabolic rate (SMR), the maximum metabolic rate and the metabolic score were then modelled as functions of temperature and/or oxygen saturation. The mean SMR at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC were 19.8 +/- 4.9, 30.8 +/- 6.1 and 54.3 +/- 4.1 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1). respectively. Between 2 and 5 degreesC, the active metabolic rate of cod almost doubled from 65 to 120 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1), to reach 177 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1) at 10 degreesC.
